Based on the patient’s signs and symptoms a prob

Based on the patient’s signs and symptoms a probable diagnosis would be pericarditis. Pericarditis, “is swelling and irritation of the pericardium, the thin saclike membrane surrounding your heart. The sharp chest pain associated with pericarditis occurs when the irritated layers of the pericardium rub against each other” (Mayo, 2018). Symptoms also include shortness of breath while reclined, heart palpitations, fatigue, abdominal/leg swelling. Causes of pericarditis are from systemic inflammatory disorders, trauma, medications or diseases like renal failure, SLE, cancer or tuberculosis. Patient’s that have chronic or long-term pericarditis have complications such as constrictive pericarditis. Which is when, “the pericardium loses much of its elasticity and resembles a rigid case that’s tight around the heart, which keeps the heart from working properly. This condition is called constrictive pericarditis and often leads to severe swelling of the legs and abdomen, as well as shortness of breath” (Mayo, 2018). Cardiac tamponade occurs when fluid collects in the pericardium. The, “excess fluid puts pressure on the heart and doesn’t allow it to fill properly. That means less blood leaves the heart, which causes a dramatic drop in blood pressure. Cardiac tamponade can be fatal if it isn’t promptly treated” (Mayo, 2018). If pericarditis is left untreated, “this condition can be life-threatening, possibly leading to the development of symptoms of heart failure. However, many people with constrictive pericarditis can lead healthy lives if they get treatment for their condition” (Geske, 2017). Geske JB, et al. (2017).
